| Domain name search simple tips A good solid domain name is the foundation upon which all successful online businesses are built. A short, easy to remember domain name has been shown in survey after survey to be the best way of increasing traffic to your web site, improving search engine rankings, and of course making more sales and building brand awareness. Searching for the perfect domain name can be a bit of a challenge, particularly for new business owners. There are some tips, however, that can help make this process easier and much more effective. Some of our favorite domain name search tips include: Take some time to determine the business category into which your online business fits. If you sell a product, what words or phrases best describe that product? If you sell a service, what words would an outsider use to describe that service? Some industries, such as the computer industry, the medical world and the like, have their own industry-specific jargon. Those in search of your particular product or service may use those jargon words when searching the internet. Having your web site be one of the first ones they see when they do a Google, Yahoo or other web site search can do wonders when it comes to increasing your business. Don’t be discouraged if the first domain names you think of are taken. Most common words and phrases have already been taken by others. You may have to be creative to come up with a domain name that describes your business and is easy to remember. Make a list of possible domain names and start searching for them. Check to see if the domain names you want are taken. If they are, you will have to come up with other, similar domain names. When registering a domain name that is similar to an existing name, however, be careful to ensure that you are not infringing on anyone’s copyright or trademark. Keep in mind that most large companies, brand names and agency names are trademarked, and using a name that is easy to confuse for an existing company could open you up to a lawsuit. When doing your domain name search, be sure that the name you choose will be easy to remember. In most cases, a shorter domain name will be more memorable than a longer one. There are some exceptions to this rule, such as domain names that consist of a well known phrase, but these exceptions are rare. Remember too that using a long domain name increases the chances that potential customers will misspell your domain name and be unable to find you. You may be able to mitigate this somewhat by registering several common misspellings of your domain name, but you will be unable to cover every possible one. |
