Using an e-commerce shopping cartcan help your business reach markets you could never reach locally. Internet customers have come to expect an online shopping cart system inorder to make purchases, and will tend to be unwilling to place ordersthrough traditional means such as fax or phone call.  Here are sometips to make your e-commerce site a success.

Try to make your product namesand descriptions easily found by search engine.  You should notonly refer to your product's specific name or model number, as customersare less likely to search for those specific terms.  You should alsoinclude descriptive terms that describe your product and what it does ina way that a layman may search for.  For example, if you sell coffeemakers called the Roastmaster 3000, make sure that each product page alsoincludes terms like 'coffee maker', 'filter', 'roast', and so on in orderto make it more likely for customers to find you.

Make sure that you are using analyticsto determine your success rate.  Turning a visitor into a customeris called a 'conversion', and you should be very interested to find outhow frequently customers buy from you.  A low conversion rate typicallyindicates a problem, such as too high of a price, a poor description, unsuccessfuladvertising, and others.  Yahoo! and Google both offer analyticsfor websites that can help you achieve this easily.  If you arenot sure where to advertise your site, you could consider using GoogleAdwords to easily advertise on a broad range of sites.  Alternatively,you could consider establishing an affiliate program which pays commissionto sites that provide you sales.



When designing your e-commercesite, make sure to remove unnecessary links from the shopping cart andorder process.  Links and search boxes increase the likelihoodthat someone can navigate away from the order, leaving it incomplete. However, you will need to make sure that the product information is completeand doesn't require the customer to look elsewhere on their own. Other necessary information, such as shipping rates, can be done in a pop-upwindow. 

Testing your site to ensure thatthe order process is simple and easy is important.  You do notwant potential customers to be turned away because the process is too longor too difficult.  Do not ask for unnecessary information as customersare wary of giving out details that are not required.  Also, makesure that you are using a current security certificate for your orderingprocess as this is another factor that will cause some customers toabandon their order.

If you are not sure what e-commerceshopping cart software to use, consult with your web hosting providerto see if bundling options are available.  Even free or low-costweb hosts often offer e-commerce options to businesses.  You willlikely need a merchant account in order to take credit cards, unless youare willing to use a service such as PayPal.
