Tips on Improving Search Engine Ranking.

1. Ask others to link to you.

Search engines use link analysis as a component in their ranking protocol. It is harder for webmasters to manipulate links like they can keywords. If you want to improve search engine ranking, you need to get many high-quality links from other sites.  They are inbound links. Getting links from sites that rank high in the search engines will help your rank. Asking for links from others may take time, but it is worthwhile.

The way to find sites is to put your keywords in a search engine, and contact the top fifty sites. Ask for a link from them, and if they agree, offer to link to them. However, if this is your first site, and if the site is not in the search engines, it may harder to find other people to link with. If you have to, start with low-quality links. Also sites who consider themselves competitors may not want to link.

2. Have content with targeted keywords.

Another way to improve searh engine ranking is to have good content. Visitors will enjoy good articles and software and will be more likely to link to your site. Put targeted keywords in the content because search engines like targeted content.

You should make sure there are keywords on your page. The first keywords should be in the heading under <h1>Top Keyword<h1>. Place the first keyword in the page’s HTML title tag. When you place your keyword in a title or description, put the keyword before anything else.

For example, for the keyword “poodles”, don’t use “the best website about poodles”. Use “Poodles website, the best”. The title should be based on a few phrases you think users are looking for. Search engines like keywords high on the page.

Put keywords in the page headline and first paragraphs. Be careful with tables and JavaScript. They can put keywords lower on the page. Make sure the copy is in HTML text and not graphics. The HTML text should be easy to read.

3. Have proper website design.

Allow for HTML hyperlinks that lead to other pages. The search engine will catch them and follow them. You should do well in linking internally between pages. Avoid frames. Use static pages instead of pages through CGI or database-delivery.

4. Don’t spam the search engines.

Spammers put keywords in little fonts or in the same color as the background color. Search engines are wiseing up to this. Do not use spamming techniques to help your search engine ranking. They may punish or eliminate your pages from their listings.

Some have details about spamming in their guidelines. The guidelines may vary depending on if the site is free or paid. Don’t use unnecessary doorway pages. Don’t repeat a keyword too much.

5. Consider paying to increase search engine ranking.

You may want to use paid listing programs. Paid listings are listings that businesses buy from search engines through paid placement or paid inclusion programs. Paid placement happens when businesses pay more than other advertisers to make sure the listings come up because of certain keywords, and the ranking is higher. Businesses can pay on a cost per click or pay by the URL. A high search engine ranking may not be guaranteed though.
